The machine in motion
The Unitree Go2 is a four-legged robot, often called a robot dog. It stands about 70 centimetres long and 40 centimetres tall, and weighs around 15 kilograms with its battery. The body is aluminium alloy and strong engineering plastic.
Unitree unveiled it on 12 July 2023 as the successor to the Go1. It is sold in four versions: Air, Pro, X and EDU. All four share the same body, but differ in speed, sensors, computing and software access.
What it can actually do
Each leg has three joints, so twelve motors drive the robot. Unitree lists a peak joint torque of about 45 newton metres on the Pro, X and EDU versions. Walking speed is 2.5 metres per second on the Air and 3.7 metres per second on the X and EDU. Unitree says about 5 metres per second was reached in lab testing.
A spinning laser scanner sits on the head. Unitree calls it the 4D LiDAR L2 and claims a 360 by 96 degree view, with a shortest detection distance of 0.05 metres. A wide-angle camera sends live video to the phone app.
Unitree lists stair climbing, jumping, handstands and flips among the movements. The company also lists point cloud mapping, so the robot can follow a route you draw in the app. Pro and higher versions add an offline voice assistant and a side-follow mode that keeps the robot beside you.
The 2023 press release says the Go2 is empowered by the GPT large language model for understanding spoken intent. Unitree’s current product page drops the GPT wording and says instead that use varies by country or region.
Where it stands
The Go2 ships and has shipped since 2023. Unitree’s product page lists 1,600 US dollars for the Air, 2,800 for the Pro and 4,500 for the X, all before tax and freight. The EDU version is quoted by a Unitree sales contact rather than listed.
Buyers fall into two groups. Hobbyists and schools take the cheaper Air and Pro. Universities and companies take the EDU, because it allows programming of the robot itself and accepts an NVIDIA Orin computing module and a depth camera.
Warranty is six months on the Air and twelve months on the other versions. Unitree calls the Go2 a civilian robot and asks owners not to make dangerous changes to it.
What is unclear
Sources disagree on the laser scanner. The 2023 press release and the launch brochure name the L1 with a 360 by 90 degree view. The current product page names the L2 with 360 by 96 degrees. Unitree does not say when the change happened, so an older Go2 may not match the newer figure.
Battery life is given as a range, about one to two hours on the 8,000 milliamp hour pack and two to four hours on the 15,000 milliamp hour pack. Unitree does not say what task those hours cover. Payload is listed as roughly 7 to 8 kilograms, with a maximum of 10 to 12 kilograms, and no test conditions are given.
The 4G mobile connection is limited outside mainland China. Unitree says non-mainland units work in 43 European countries, excluding Ukraine, and in some parts of Asia.
