Robotaxi

A robotaxi looks like a normal car with extra hardware bolted on top. The pod on the roof holds cameras and laser scanners that build a constant picture of the street around it.

You hail one with an app, the way you hail a ride with a driver. The front seats are empty. The car unlocks for you, drives the route itself, and pulls over at the end.

In California, Waymo sells rides in the San Francisco Bay Area, Los Angeles and San Diego. In July it said it ran 577 cars and about 500,000 paid rides a week across ten cities.
